What is met·a·noi·a?

meta: "beyond" or "after"

noia: "mind"

Metanoia literally translates to "beyond mind" or "a change in mind." We also see the word repent used in exchange for metanoia. While often used interchangeably, the way we use the word repentance is like a weapon.  I don't know how many times I've heard "repent of your sins", and when I try to understand what it truly means I am met with "just don't do it".

Repentance can feel like forcing yourself to change actions or turn away from your sin, but your heart is not connected or genuine to the action. Others emphasize the need to feel sorrow or regret for your past actions or thoughts, particularly those considered harmful or sinful.

Exodus 32:9-14

9 And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

10 Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.

11 And Moses besought the Lord his God, and said, Lord, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?

12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.

13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.

14 And the Lord repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.

Here we see that God was told to repent and had repented. If repenting means to turn away from sin or sinful action, then that means that God had sinned. This is not true, the connotation of this word is blasphemous to God. God changed his mind about the Israelites and did not destroy them. God chose to keep his promise to Abraham and be a good, loving, and gracious God. God has emotions, just like any of us; emotion is not sin.

Ephesians 4:26-32 (TPT)

But don't let the passion of your emotions lead you to sin! Don't let anger control you or be fuel for revenge, not for even a day.

This is why I believe understanding what biblical repentance is and what metanoia means is important to our spiritual journies and understanding God. Metanoia emphasizes a deeper transformation that goes beyond just regret or action. It encompasses not only remorse but also a shift in one's perspective, values, and even way of life. It's a mental and emotional transformation that leads one away from where they were before.

Don't just "repent" or change your actions; renew your mind and change your heart. Seek understanding, wisdom, discernment, and humility on this journey. So now you don't do things because you are told to or due to legalism, but because you understand and your heart is genuinely seeking change, met·a·noi·a.
